Type Locality and Naming

The type section is at north margin of Penglaiba near cement plant 30 km southwest of Aksu City, Xinjiang. The Penglaiba Fm was named by Zhou Tianrong in 1990, and was published by Zhao Zhixin and Zhang Guizhi(1992).

Synonym: (蓬莱坝组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Formation is composed of light gray-grey medium- to thick-bedded fine- to coarse-crystalline dolomite intercalated with sparry calcarenite, sparry calcirudite, siliceous dolomite and siliceous bands, with a light gray crystalline limestone or dolomite at the base. In the type area, the Penglaiba Fm is 122 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the chert-bearing limestone at the top of the lower subgroup of the Qiulitag Gr (Qiulitag Fm ) of latest Cambrian

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the micrite of the Yingshan Fm

Regional extent

The Penglaiba Fm is present exposed in Kalpin to Bachu, northern Tarim. The Penglaiba Fm is roughly equivalent to the lower part of the upper subgroup of the Qiulitag Gr proposed by Zhou et al. (1990) and Zhang et al. (1991).

Fossils

The Penglaiba Fm includes Monocostatus sevierensis zone, Chosonodina herfurthis-Rossodus manitenensis zone, Glyptoconus quadraplicatus zone and Paltodus deltifer zone (Zhou et al., 1990; Zhang et al., 1991).
